"On behalf of the American Kennel Club, our member clubs, and the American purebred dog fancy, we urge you to move the 2016 World Dog Show from Russia to a nation that respects and upholds human rights for all its citizens. The international dog community deserves to enjoy the World Dog Show in a place that stands for freedom and equal rights for all. AKC cannot and will not support participation in the 2016 World Dog Show if it is held in Russia.
"As exhibitors, breeders, handlers and trainers, we teach our dogs many things. But there is no denying, they teach us too. Our bond with dogs is not defined by the type of person who holds the leash. We cannot support competition in an environment where tolerance does not exist." - From the chairman and the CEO of the American Kennel Club.

Australia: Prime Minister promises marriage equality if reelected
Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd promised to legalize same-sex marriage within the first 100 days in office if he beat Conservative opposition leader Tony Abbott in the September 7 election.
The Guardian reports:
Rudd said he supported legalising same-sex marriage "as a mark of decency to same-sex couples across the country who wish the same loving, caring relationship that, for example, I have had with Therese my wife now for the last 32 years, and for that to be formalised".
He promised Labor MPs would again have a conscience vote on the issue and he "appealed to Abbott to do the same because folk out there want this to happen".
Tony Abbott said he understood same-sex marriage was "a very important issue", acknowledging his gay sister, Christine Forster, who was in the National Press Club debate audience with her partner.
But he said the matter had been recently debated by the parliament and would not be a high priority for an incoming Coalition government. He said it would be up to the Coalition party room to decide whether Coalition MPs should get a conscience vote, if it ever came up in the future.

"'Til There Was Us" - Broadway's Best Gay Showmances
![]() |
| Chris Sieber and Kevin Burrows |
Kevin had recently seen an article compiling couples who had met on Broadway. Only problem? No gay or lesbian couples. WHAT???
So Kevin took it upon himself to rectify that situation.
I have to share a portion of it with you:
Last Friday, while surfing through the major Broadway websites, I came across a feature entitled "''Til There Was You': Broadway's Best Showmances." It was a collection of stories of 18 Broadway couples who fell in love while performing in or working on the same show. As I scrolled through the slideshow with the love stories and images of these couples -- most of whom I know -- I started feeling uneasy. And by the time I got to the end of the article, I was astounded. Of the couples depicted, not one of them was a same-sex couple.
How could this be? I mean, I'm pretty sure most people are aware of this (and even if people aren't, this major Broadway website certainly must be), but there are quite a few gay individuals in the Broadway community. I know, shocker, right?
I thought about that gay, theater-loving kid in some small town somewhere -- this website offering him some hope and a connection to a potentially bright future -- seeing this feature and not seeing himself represented in any way. Once again, something is making him feel different, other, alone.
I want that kid to know that we are out here. And not only are we out here, but we are out here in huge numbers. We have fantastic, successful careers, relationships, marriages, and kids! That's what I want the next generation to see.
Make sure you read all of Kevin's fab essay at Huffington Post.
Plus, there's a slideshow featuring 20 (just the tip of the LGBT Broadway couples iceberg) Broadway-born gay and lesbian couples. You might recognize number 19.
Forward.
Peru: A billboard creates drinking water out of thin air
The billboard pictured here is real, it's located in Lima, Peru, and it produces around 100 liters of water a day (about 26 gallons) from nothing more than humidity, a basic filtration system and a little gravitational ingenuity.
The billboard is located in Lima, Peru, the largest city in Peru and the fifth largest in all of the Americas, with some 7.6 million people (closer to 9 million when you factor in the surrounding metro area). Because it sits along the southern Pacific Ocean, the humidity in the city averages 83% (it's actually closer to 100% in the mornings). But Lima is also part of what's called a coastal desert: It lies at the northern edge of the Atacama, the driest desert in the world, meaning the city sees perhaps half an inch of precipitation annually (Lima is the second largest desert city in the world after Cairo). Lima thus depends on drainage from the Andes as well as runoff from glacier melt — both sources on the decline because of climate change.
According to Mayo DraftFCB, the billboard has already produced 9,450 liters of water (about 2,500 gallons) in just three months, which it says equals the water consumption of "hundreds of families per month." Just imagine what dozens, hundreds or even thousands of these things, strategically placed in the city itself or outlying villages, might do. And imagine what you could accomplish in any number of troubled spots around the world that need potable water with a solution like this.

President Obama opposes Sochi Olympic boycott
"I know that one question that's been raised is how do we approach the Olympics. I want to just make very clear right now I do not think it's appropriate to boycott the Olympics. We've got a bunch of Americans out there who are training hard, who are doing everything they can to succeed. Nobody's more offended than me by some of the anti-gay and lesbian legislation that you've been seeing in Russia.
"But as I said just this week, I've spoken out against that, not just with respect to Russia, but a number of other countries where we continue to do work with them but we have a strong disagreement on this issue.
"And one of the things I'm really looking forward to is maybe some gay and lesbian athletes bringing home the gold or silver or bronze, which I think would go a long way in rejecting the kind of attitudes that we're seeing there. If Russia doesn’t have gay or lesbian athletes, it will probably make their team weaker." - President Obama, speaking yesterday at a press conference. Watch video via TPM below.
NYC: Vicious Bronx gay bashing gets 7 year sentence
Bronx gang member Nelson Falu, 20, was yesterday sentenced to seven years in prison for his role in a 2010 gay bashing and torture incident that horrified New York City.
From the NY Daily News:
Falu was among eight members of the "Latin King Goonies" who tortured and beat two teenage boys and a 30-year-old man over the course of several hours in a Bronx home, while using anti-gay slurs. Prosecutors say the gang members sodomized two of the men with a plunger, chained one to a chair, and used a cigarette lighter to inflict burns.
Falu, 20, and two other participants, took guilty pleas in June. The cases against the other gang members are still pending.

Social Security Administration announces new policies for married same-sex couples
The Social Security Administration announced on Friday that since the Supreme Court's historic rulings, which on June 26 struck down a key section of the so-called Defense of Marriage Act, processes will soon be in place to treat same-sex married couples equally:
"I am pleased to announce that Social Security is now processing some retirement spouse claims for same-sex couples and paying benefits where they are due," said Carolyn W. Colvin, acting commissioner of Social Security, in a statement released Friday. "We continue to work closely with the Department of Justice. In the coming weeks and months, we will develop and implement additional policy and processing instructions. We appreciate the public’s patience as we work through the legal issues to ensure that our policy is legally sound and clear. I encourage individuals who believe they may be eligible for Social Security benefits to apply now, to protect against the loss of any potential benefits. We will process claims as soon as additional instructions become finalized."

George Takei: Russian Olympics is "situation of good vs evil"
Original Star Trek star and LGBT activist George Takei guested The Last Word to discuss with Lawrence O'Donnell the current issues involving LGBT athletes participating in the Sochi Olympics given the new anti-gay laws passed in Russia.
"This is a situation of good vs. evil," said the 76-year-old married activist on The Last Word with Lawrence O'Donnell. "It is evil that is happening there, and we must not play into Putin's game."
Calling the antigay climate in Russia "a terrible situation," Takei urged athletes, corporations, and everyday citizens to boycott the 2014 Winter Olympic Games, scheduled to take place in Sochi, Russia. Alternately, Takei suggested that the 2014 Olympics "must get out of Russia," suggesting Vancouver, Canada, as a friendly location that already contains the infrastructure to support the Olympics, as it hosted the 2010 Winter Games.
"There are athletes that are gay or lesbian and their supporters are gay or lesbian too, and they are being put in danger and if something horrific happens — and it’s very likely given the kind of history of what’s been happening there — the responsibility is great," said Takei. "The [International Olympic Committee] can move the Olympics out. There is enough time to do that yet… [But] the clock is ticking."
NOM's Brian Brown is mad about Iowa campaign finance investigation
"The National Organization for Marriage has violated no campaign finance rules in Iowa, and we decry the decision by the Iowa Ethics and Campaign Disclosure Board to open an investigation.
"This inquiry is a witch hunt spawned by a delusional homosexual activist who fancies himself becoming the president of the United States and who is a serial filer of frivolous allegations against us whenever we stand up for traditional marriage. The complaint is another attempt to shut down criticism of activist judges and politicians who wish to redefine marriage.
"We are concerned about the continual use of the legal system by Karger and other homosexual marriage advocates who are intent on denying us and the people of Iowa their civil rights to defend marriage as God created it." - Hate group leader Brian Brown
I posted yesterday that NOM is now under investigation for possible campaign finance improprieties. Again.
Alec Baldwin to host new MSNBC show
Word comes from senior sources at MSNBC that Alec Baldwin (seven seasons for NBC's 30 Rock; frequent host of SNL) will get his own weekly show on the progressive news channel.
From Mediaite:
According to our source, the so far untitled show will air Fridays at 10 p.m. ET and will feature a large dose of Baldwin’s outspoken liberal politics.
The MSNBC 10 p.m. hour is currently occupied by Lawrence O’Donnell, but only Monday through Thursday. As such, this new Baldwin show will not replace any of the network’s primetime talk shows — just the Lockup prison documentary series that airs Friday evenings.
Our source insists its a done deal but there is no question MSNBC is not quite prepared for an announcement. Yet.
For a bit of foreshadowing, perhaps, check out the video below with Alec Baldwin reading teasers for Lawrence O'Donnell in May of 2012. Perhaps the idea for his own show has been in development going all the way back to last spring?

Greg Louganis - "Don't boycott the Sochi Olympics"
Four-time Olympic gold medalist Greg Louganis has written an op-ed piece in which he strenuously objects to a boycott of the Sochi Olympics:
Boycotting sends the wrong message and will only harm the hard-working athletes set to compete in the 2014 Olympics, not the Russian government itself.
I know from personal experience. My first Olympics I won Silver at age 16, and then in 1980, at the height of my diving career, President Jimmy Carter opted to boycott the 1980 Olympics in Moscow as a method of protesting the Soviet invasion in Afghanistan. The toll on fellow athletes and me was devastating. We had trained our entire lives for that one moment.
Fortunately, I was lucky enough to continue my diving career and return to compete and win two gold medals in the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles (an Olympics the Eastern Block counties boycotted) and repeat two gold medals in 1988 Olympics in Seoul. But, other athletes were not so lucky. Some of those who missed the 1980 games never had another chance to shine.
This boycott hurt the wrong people, taking a toll on prominent athletes more than the country it targeted. I’m concerned the same would be true today. There are far too many athletes for whom the 2014 Sochi Olympics represents their only chance at success. A boycott will only hurt these athletes’ careers.

National Organization for Marriage under investigation AGAIN for campaign contributions
The ironically named National Organization for Marriage (which actually campaigns against marriage rights for gays and lesbians) will be investigated for trying to hide the names of its donors during the successful campaign to unseat three Iowa state Supreme Court justices who backed same-sex marriage. Basically, a revenge campaign.
The Iowa Ethics & Campaign Disclosure Board voted unanimously to investigate the National Organization for Marriage, saying that if the allegations against it are proven true, the marriage group’s actions would violate state law.
The decision to investigate is a triumph for Republican former presidential candidate Fred Karger, who filed the complaint against the National Organization for Marriage on June 13. Karger said the D.C.-based group spent $635,000 in 2010 and about $100,000 in 2012 to try to oust four of the justices who were part of a unanimous 2009 decision that allowed same-sex marriage in Iowa.
“We caught them,” Karger told reporters after today’s meeting. “I’m so grateful to the ethics commission.”
The Des Moines Register notes that NOM looks to be "a player in Iowa again," with an eye on removing Iowa Senate Majority Leader Mike Gronstal from office, a champion of same-sex marriage rights, and the other three justices who authored the marriage ruling four years ago.

Cristiano Ronaldo handles game crasher with class
Watching Cristiano handle this over-excited fan with so much patience and aplomb is pretty amazing. It could have been dangerous, but the fan clearly just wanted to meet his idol.
From Yahoo Sports:
A pitch invader wearing a Ronaldo shirt managed to get rather intimate with his hero. Ronaldo obliged as the fan hugged him for a rather incredible length of time without interference from Sun Life Stadium's dozy security.
The fan appeared to whisper his entire life story to Ronaldo, who calmly went with it until a cop finally strolled by to escort the pitch invader away.
You can say a lot of things about Ronaldo, but you can't say he isn't a good listener.

Iowa couple denied wedding venue because GAY

Lee Stafford and his fiance were turned away from a Grimes, Iowa wedding venue because they are gay. Betty Odgaard, owner of Gortz Haus, the venue where they had hoped to wed, says she denied them based on religious principles. She is a Mennonite.
KCCI reports:
"Can I have my beliefs without being ostracized for that? I think I have my right too, and to stand firm my convictions and beliefs," said Odgaard.
Stafford said he has a new location for his wedding and said rejection hurts, but he will not let it affect his wedding.
"We are going to find some people that are still going to be reluctant to embrace us. That is just going to happen," said Stafford.
Stafford said he plans to pursue his case with the Iowa Civil Rights Commission.

Oregon reaches one-third of petition signatures for marriage equality in only 12 days
The marriage equality kids in Oregon are NOT playing :)
After only 12 days of signature gathering, they are already at the one-third mark in terms of signatures needed:
According to Oregon Says I Do campaign spokeswoman Amy Ruiz, the campaign has already collected 42,000 of the 116,284 signatures needed to qualify for the November 2014 ballot.
She added that some 1,700 volunteers have collected roughly 90 percent of the signatures, with the rest coming from campaign staffers. Supporters have until next summer to collect the remaining signatures.
Using volunteers, Ruiz told The Oregonian, helps the campaign to build its organization.
If successful, the referendum would reverse the state's 2004 voter-approved constitutional amendment limiting marriage to heterosexual couples and Oregon would make history as the first state to do so.

Pentagon may grant gay soldiers ten day leave in order to travel to marry spouses
According to the Associated Press, the Pentagon is weighing the idea granting up to ten days leave to gay soldiers who need to travel to other states in order to legally marry:
According to a U.S. official, the memo is under legal review by the Justice Department, and the Pentagon will not be able to take any action until that review is finished. "Although we have bases and installations in all 50 states, not all state laws are equal when it comes to same-sex marriage," a defense official said. "That is why we are looking at providing extra leave for same-sex couples who want to get married to travel to a state where same-sex marriages are legal." The officials were not authorized to discuss the memo publicly, so spoke on condition of anonymity.
According to the AP, on-base housing and health care benefits may be offered to the legal spouses of gay soldiers by the end of August.
New York Times Op-Doc: An Attack on Equality
New York is regarded as a gay-friendly city in a state that has legalized gay marriage, but this Op-Doc video shows that it can still be dangerous for a same-sex couple to walk down the street holding hands.
On May 5, 2013, a young couple was attacked outside Madison Square Garden in broad daylight. Nick Porto and Kevin Atkins were walking hand in hand when a group of several men, clad in Knicks jerseys, called them “faggots” and pushed them to the ground, beating them to the point of a torn ligament and a broken nose. In this video, Mr. Porto and Mr. Atkins tell their story.

Students rally around fired gay teacher in Glendora, California
![]() |
| Ken Bencomo (R) |
This makes my heart swell a bit :)
After the wedding of a popular teacher was made public, the private school he taught at fired him. Now present and former students are rallying to his defense and demanding he be reinstated.
More than 45,000 people have signed a petition launched by Ken Bencomo's students, demanding that he be allowed to return to his job this fall. Bencomo has taught English at St. Lucy's Priory High School in Glendora, Calif., for 17 years. On July 1, a local newspaper ran a front page article about marriage equality, featuring a photo of Bencomo and his husband.
Despite an outpouring of support by alumni, faculty, and current students, Bencomo swiftly was told by school administrators that his marriage violated the Catholic church's teachings, so he had to be fired.
A press conference is planned for 9am tomorrow at the school to deliver the 45K signatures.
Brittany Littleton, an alum of the school and former student of Bencomo, had this to say about her reasons for coordinating the petition: “As a proud alum of St. Lucy’s, I am hurt and saddened by this blatant discrimination against Mr. B. No one should be fired for marrying the person they love. Along with current and former St. Lucy’s students, I look forward to taking this message, along with 45,000 signatures, directly to my alma mater. It’s the Christian thing to do.”

President Obama cancels meeting with Putin, has no patience for anti-gay laws
The White House announced Tuesday that President Barack Obama would not meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin for a one-on-one meeting this September because of the country's record on human rights, among other conflicts that have arisen like granting asylum to NSA leaker Edward Snowden.
The meeting was scheduled to take place after the G-20 summit in St. Petersberg. The meeting was canceled due to a "lack of progress on issues like missile defense, arms control, trade and commercial relations, global security issues, and human rights and civil society," White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said according to the Washington Blade.
The announcement followed Obama's appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno Tuesday in a wide-sweeping interview, which included conversations on the economy, the Affordable Care Act, and the current law in Russia that places a ban on so-called homosexual propaganda.

George Takei: "Move the Olympics out of Russia"
"Last week, Russia’s Sports Minister confirmed that the country intends to enforce its laws against visiting LGBT athletes, trainers and fans, meaning anyone even so much as waving a rainbow flag (and I presume many men enthusiastically watching and dramatically commenting on figure skating) would be arrested, held for weeks and then deported.Given this position, the IOC must do the right thing, protect its athletes and the fans, and move the 2014 Winter Olympics out of Russia. [snip]
"Many believe that such a call to move the Olympics out of Russia goes too far. Would this be their opinion if the law instead called for the arrest of any Jews, Roman Catholics or Muslims should they display any sign of their religion, such as a wearing a yamaka or praying while facing Mecca? Discrimination in any form is a blight upon the Winter Games, and it must not be tolerated." - George Takei

Seattle hate crime ends in broken bones and fractured eye socket
Jason Jacobs was chased in his home neighborhood of Capitol Hill and mercilessly beaten unconscious by a homophobic mob of three men and two women. The 37-year-old told KIRO News that they began taunting him because he was wearing a pink shirt and shoes.
The attack left Jacobs with a broken nose, two busted ribs, a fractured eye socket, and several upcoming surgeries to repair the damage. “I feel unsafe in my own neighborhood,” he said.
What’s more troubling is Jacobs’ claim that the attack happened within eyeshot of a nearby Starbucks, which at the time was still open and serving customers. Of several that allegedly witnessed the attack, only one man notified the police.
Neither men could give a description of the assailants, but Jacobs is hopeful. “Hopefully somebody saw something,” he said. “Hopefully we can get some justice.”

President Obama talks Sochi Olympics, Edward Snowden on The Tonight Show
Last night President Obama made a lengthy appearance on the Tonight Show, where Jay Leno brought up the subject of Russia's crackdown on LGBT people.
Leno: "This seems like Germany - let's round up the Jews, let's round up the gays, let's round up the...it starts with that. You round up people you don't like. Why isn't more of the world outraged at this?"
Obama: "I've been very clear that when it comes to universal rights, when it comes to people's basic freedoms, that whether you are discriminating on the basis of race, religion, gender, or sexual orientation, you are violating the basic morality that should transcend every country, and I have no patience for countries that try to treat gays or lesbians or transgender persons in ways that intimidate them or are harmful to them.”
[snip]
"What's happening in Russia is not unique. When I traveled to Africa there were some countries that are doing a lot of good things for their people, who we're working with and helping on development issues but in some cases have persecuted gays and lesbians and it makes for some uncomfortable press conferences sometimes but one of the things that I think is very important for me to speak out on is making sure that people are treated fairly and justly because that's what we stand for and I believe that's not a preset that's not just unique to America but should apply everywhere."
When Leno asked him if it would affect the Olympics, Obama replied:
“I think Putin and Russia have a big stake in making sure that the Olympics work, and I think that they understand that for most of the countries that participate in the Olympics we wouldn’t tolerate gays and lesbians being treated differently. They are athletes. They are there to compete. If Russia wants to uphold the Olympic spirit, then every judgment should be made on the track or in the swimming pool or on the balance beam and people’s sexual orientation shouldn’t have anything to do with it."

Two year old accosted at Walmart, called "fa**ot" for wearing headband
This is a pretty terrible story. Imagine someone touching your 2 year old son like this in a store.
Dexter is a 2-year-old boy who happens to love pink. His mother, Katie Vyktoriah, a stay-at-home mom and blogger, posted a horrific tale over the weekend of the experience she had when she took Dexter to Walmart.
Read the entire story at Huffington Post.
The post has gone viral to the point that her site crashed due to the high level of traffic.
The story is reposted at the HuffPost, and the unfortunate encounter her son had with an ignoramus began after two girls giggled at her son in his pink headband.
She writes:
Out of nowhere a big booming voice rang out. "THAT'S a BOY?!" The man was overly large with a bushy beard and a camouflage shirt with the arms cut off. He had tattered shorts and lace-up work boots with no laces. I could smell the fug of cigarette smoke surrounding him, and there was a definite pong of beer on him.
"Yes," I said simply, still smiling.
With no notice, the man stepped forward, grabbed the headband off of Dexter's head and threw it to the bottom of our shopping cart. He then cuffed Dexter around the side of his head (not hard, but that is not the point) and said with a big laugh, "You'll thank me later, little man!"
At the same time as I stepped forward, Dexter grabbed his head where the man had smacked him and threw his other hand forward, stomping his foot and shouting, "NO!" I got between my son and this man and said very firmly, "If you touch my son again, I will cut your damn hands off."
The guy snarled at me, looked at Dexter with disgust and said, "Your son is a f*cking fa***t." He then started sauntering out, but not before he threw over his shoulder, "He'll get shot for it one day."
I stood there, shaking, fists clenched, waiting for the man to disappear out the door, and then I fell apart. I was shaking so hard, holding back tears and comforting Dexter.
Not a single person said or did anything. There were several people who had witnessed the encounter, but not one of them came over to offer support or console me or my son.
Let me repeat to you: Dexter is 2 YEARS OLD.

More bars and restaurants joining #DumpRussianVodka campaign
A 200-member coalition of NYC restaurant and nightclubs has joined the boycott of Russian vodka.
Here's more on their protest in Manhattan.
Holding up a bottle of the popular Russian brand Stolichnaya, the United Restaurant and Tavern Owners Association President Paul Hurley shook his head and called for a city-wide boycott of Russian spirits and liquor. "All these vodkas here, we're going to throw them out," Hurley said. "We feel enough is enough."
Hurley, who urged people to drink American-made alcohol instead, said the boycott was the first step toward pressuring Russia to change its policies toward gay people.
Paddy MacCarty, who owns a Manhattan bar called Nevada Smiths, said he's planning to toss out every bottle of Russian vodka behind the bar.
At least 200 New York bars and restaurants are participating in the boycott, which has spread to many gay bars across North America in the wake of a newly passed Russian law that bans the so-called "propaganda of nontraditional sexual relations."

First gay couple registers to marry in Uruguay
Two gay men who have been a couple for 14 years have become the first to register to marry in Uruguay, hours after a law came into force allowing same-sex marriages in the country.
Rodrigo Borda, 39, and Sergio Miranda, 45, said it was a day of much joy and emotion, but also of responsibility.
Uruguay is the second South American nation to pass a gay-marriage law.
Mr Borda and Mr Miranda said they would celebrate their wedding in September.
It would be a "very public affair", not only because they wanted to share the moment with "all the world", but also because they wanted "to give an example to those gay couples who may be thinking about getting married but don't dare to", the couple added.
Three years ago, Argentina became the first country in Latin America to allow same-sex marriages.

Since then, Brazil's Supreme Court overwhelmingly voted in favor of granting same-sex couples the same legal rights as married heterosexuals.

Pennsylvania: Mayor of Braddock performs first same-sex marriage
This will probably push the marriage equality issue further into the public square.
Braddock Mayor John Fetterman performed a marriage ceremony for John Kandray and Bill Grey last night.
The couple that was married knows that neither the Pennsylvania nor the federal government may recognize their marriage, but they say one day they hope it will be recognized by both.
“Showing our commitment to each other,” Gray said, “which we’ve been at that point for a long time, just now we can prove it.”
When they heard that Montgomery County was issuing licenses to same-sex couples, they went across the state to get one. And then they heard Braddock Mayor John Fetterman was willing to marry them.
“I just think it’s time people in Pennsylvania say, Mr. Corbett, you know, tear down this law,” Fetterman said. “DOMA is a fundamentally unjust piece of legislation.”
“We pay the same taxes, we do everything the same, but we don’t have the same rights,” Kandray said.
“It felt like, you know what, let’s stand up for ourselves and do this,” he added.
So at the mayor’s home and in front of the couple’s family and friends, they exchanged rings and were married by the mayor.
Last month the ACLU filed a lawsuit seeking to overturn Pennsylvania's ban on same-sex marriage.

Just a few ways the GOP-led House could have done more of the people's work
On the final day of the House's recent session before taking a five week summer recess, Republicans voted for a 40th time to repeal ObamaCare. An act that will serve no purpose, as the Senate has no intention of voting on such a repeal.
That in mind, Geoffrey Cowley at MSNBC has thought up some issues the House COULD have taken up to make lives for American better. Here's just a few:
- Pass the American Jobs Act
- Pass the Paycheck Fairness Act
- Pass a Responsible Homeowner Refinancing Act
- Repeal tax breaks for outsourcing jobs
- Create tax incentives for insourcing jobs
- Update and strengthen the Voting Rights Act
- Revive the 2010 DISCLOSE Act to shed light on corporate money in politics
- Reduce tax breaks for oil companies
- Increase support for sustainable clean energy
- Pass an immigration bill
- Institute universal background checks for gun sales
- Institute universal pre-K education
- Restore the 1.6 million jobs being lost to sequestration
- Renovate the U.S. Postal Service
- Restore the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (aka food stamps)
- Pass the Employment Non-Discrimination Act
- Ban racial profiling by police departments
- Address the backlog on VA benefits
- Expand the Affordable Care Act to cover all legal U.S. residents
Head over to Geoffrey's article for more ways the House could have done the people's work.

RNC Chair Reince Priebus demands networks cancel Hillary Clinton documentaries
RNC Chair Reince Priebus has sent letters to NBC and CNN demanding recently announced films celebrating the life of Hillary Clinton be cancelled. The RNC sees the programing as a contribution of sorts to Clinton's possible campaign for President in 2016. Clinton has not announced whether she will or will not run.
As a result, the Republican National Committee says they will formally bar Republicans from partnering with the networks on any primary or Presidential debates in 2016.
Priebus wrote to CNN:
I find CNN’s actions disturbing and disappointing. Your credibility as a supposedly unbiased news network will most certainly be jeopardized by the decision to show political favoritism and produce an extended commercial for Secretary Clinton’s nascent campaign.
And to NBC:
I find this disturbing and disappointing. NBC cannot purport to be a neutral party in American politics, and the credibility of NBC News, already damaged by the partisanship of MSNBC, will be further undermined by the actions of NBC Universal executives who have taken it upon themselves to produce an extended commercial for Secretary Clinton’s nascent campaign.
Republicans must really be afraid of Hillary if they are making such demands when Hillary has made no announcement on the topic.
What's next? Anyone who might THINK of running, years down the road, cannot be profiled on TV? Ever?
Hmm....

Eighty-three members of Congress ask Sec. of State Kerry for protections for LGBT Olympic athletes
A letter penned by Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY) and co-signed by 83 members of the US House has been sent to Secretary of State John Kerry demanding protections for LGBT athletes at the Sochi Olympics. From the letter:
We applaud the State Department’s commitment to ensuring that U.S. diplomacy and foreign assistance promote and protect the human rights of LGBT persons abroad, and the actions your agency has already taken to communicate concerns about the overall direction on LGBT rights in Russia directly to the Russian government.
In light of the importance of U.S. leadership on LGBT issues, and the quickly-approaching Sochi Games, we urge the State Department to determine the appropriate course of action to assure the safety and well being of LGBT and LGBT— supporting individuals involved in or attending the 2014 Sochi Olympics and Paralympics.
We look forward to hearing from you regarding what efforts have been undertaken, especially efforts undertaken in coordination with other foreign governments, and are committed to working together with you on this issue.
Buzzfeed has the full list of signees.
Contradicting statements have been made on the issue of Russia's anti-gay laws and the upcoming Sochi Olympics. Despite claims to the contrary by the IOC, last week Russian officials said that both athletes and attendees of the Sochi Olympics will indeed to be subject to arrest under Russia's "homosexual propaganda" ban.

Second-place finisher on Kids Jeopardy!: "I was cheated"
From the Today Show:
Last week 12-year-old Thomas Hurley III made headlines when he misspelled "Emancipation Proclamation" during the final question on "Kids Jeopardy!" and earned sympathy from others who might have made the same mistake.
In an interview with Danbury, Conn.'s News-Times, he said, "I was pretty upset that I was cheated out of the final 'Jeopardy!' question. It was just a spelling error."
The final "Jeopardy!" question, phrased in the form of an answer, was this: "Abraham Lincoln called this document, which took effect in 1863, 'a fit and necessary war measure.'"
Hurley's answer was correct, but included an extra "t" and was considered invalid because of the misspelling.
I'll mention here that winner Skyler Hornback bet big and got the answer right, so even with the right spelling Hurley wouldn't have walked away with the first prize
His family and friends are "proud of me," he said, but added, "It's just upsetting to have lost that way. I don't know why it would have counted as the wrong answer."
"Jeopardy!" producers told The Hollywood Reporter in an email: "If 'Jeopardy!' were to give credit for an incorrect response (however minor), the show would effectively penalize the other players. We love presenting young people as contestants on our show and make every effort to be fair and consistent in their treatment."

Pennsylvania state Rep. Brian Sims launches petition to end LGBT discrimination in his state
From Pennsylvania state Rep. Brian Sims' Facebook page:
Good morning, everyone.
As some of you may be aware, in Pennsylvania, an individual can be fired or refused services simply because of his or her sexual orientation or gender identity or expression. It's legal discrimination, and it's time we stand for equality in the Commonwealth.
That's why I've started a petition.
I understand that this fight isn't just mine alone. I understand that thousands of Pennsylvanians want equality, and the opportunity to demand it from their legislators.
I'm asking for your help, your passion, and your commitment to the words written in this very state over 200 years ago, that we are all created equal and endowed with the unalienable Rights of Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.
Please sign this petition, share it on your personal pages, tweet it, email it, and shout it in the streets!

San Diego County Clerk withdraws challenge to Prop 8 repeal
San Diego County Clerk Ernest Dronenburg on Friday withdrew his petition asking the California Supreme Court to halt same-sex marriages and consider whether the Supreme Court's Prop 8 ruling applies only to the plaintiffs involved in the case.
From the Union Tribune:
In a news release sent out Friday afternoon, Dronenburg said he canceled the petition because it covered the same ground as another petition filed earlier to the court.
The first petition was filed July 12 by Dennis Hollingsworth and others. Hollingsworth, a former state senator, has worked with ProtectMarriage.com in support of Proposition 8, which amended the state Constitution to define marriage as a union between a man and a woman.
Dronenburg said he was withdrawing his petition, which he filed July 19, to speed up the legal process that he hopes will clarify the current legal standing of Prop. 8.
Dronenburg has said he wanted county clerks to stop issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples because it would be “cruel” if such people tied the knot and then later learned that their marriages were invalid. However, it would seem strange that a man so concerned for the "well-being" of gays and lesbians would hire attorney Charles LiMandri, a vocal supporter of Prop. 8 and head of the Freedom of Conscience Defense Fund in Rancho Santa Fe.
Coincidence? I think not.

New Mexico: Gay couple forced to back of a bus for holding hands
The Advocate reports that Ron McCoy and his partner Chris Bowers flew into Albuquerque International Sunport on June 28. They were planning to attend Albuquerque's Pride festival that weekend, then kick off a road trip of the Southwest, according to Albuquerque's KQRE.
But when the couple boarded an airport shuttle to pick up their rental car, they say they sat down toward the front of the bus and took one another's hand.
"I saw him look at us, look down at his hands, and he looked so angry," McCoy told KQRE. "He just blurted out at me, he goes, OK, if you're going to do that, you're going to the back of the bus."
Flabergasted by the driver's tone, the couple complied and moved to the back of the bus. But when the shuttle stop, the couple approached the driver to inquire about why he demanded they move.
McCoy told KQRE he said to the bus driver, "I think it was because you didn't like the fact that I was holding my partner's hand." Then McCoy says the driver responded by saying "'See, now you're telling on yourself.' My partner responds, 'Well, that's discrimination,' and the driver responds, 'You're telling on yourself again.'"
KQRE spoke with a woman who witnessed the exchange, and said she was appalled by the driver's behavior.
A spokesman for the airport confirmed that the driver had acted inappropriately, and called the driver's behavior "absolutely unacceptable."
A manager for the company that runs the shuttles, Standard Parking, told KQRE the driver "was inappropriate and got carried away," but that he did not consider the incident discrimination. The manager told KQRE the driver in question was still working for the company.
UPDATE: The shuttle service company has apologized for the actions of its driver.
Standard Parking Inc. has stated that it has a zero tolerance policy toward discrimination and suspended the employee after learning of the June incident, reports the Associated Press. It also stressed its commitment to its customers’ equal rights.

Happy 52nd birthday President Obama
President Obama turns 52 on Sunday and is spending part of the day at the Camp David presidential retreat in Maryland.
The White House said little about how he's celebrating. He played golf Saturday with friends from his days in Hawaii and Chicago. Some of them joined him at Camp David.
Obama is scheduled to return to the White House on Sunday afternoon.
Raven-Symone of "Cosby Show" fame comes out
Raven-Symone of "The Cosby Show" and "That's So Raven" fame has come out:
"I can finally get married! Yay government! So proud of you," she tweeted.
There have been rumors about the former Cosby kid's sexuality for sometime. Last year, the National Inquirer published a story that she was a lesbian and living with her girlfriend AzMarie Livingston.
In May of 2012 the That's So Raven star tweeted, "I'm living my personal life the way I'm happiest. I'm not one… to disclose who I'm dating. And I shall not start now. My sexual orientation is mine, and the person I'm dating, to know."
US issues global terrorism alert for American travelers
The State Department issued a global travel alert to warn Americans abroad of a potential terrorist attack before the end of August.
Sen. Saxby Chambliss of Georgia tells NBC's "Meet the Press" that "there's an awful lot of chatter out there" and he says it's "very reminiscent of what we saw pre-9/11."
Sen. Chambliss is describing "the chatter" detected by U.S. intelligence agencies that led the Obama administration to order the weekend closure of 21 U.S. embassies and consulates in the Muslim world, and issue a global travel warning to Americans.

Olympic gold medalist Matthew Mitcham calls Russian anti-gay laws "horrific"

Olympian Matthew Mitcham says new Russian laws, which would see athletes at next year's Sochi Winter Olympics jailed if they are involved in any type of gay pride activities, are "horrific".
The Russian government has warned those who wear a rainbow pin or T-shirt or wave the gay pride flag face jail terms under laws signed off by President Vladimir Putin in June. Even gay couples holding hands is illegal.
The gold medal-winning diver from the 2008 Beijing Games said the laws were in violation of basic human rights.
"It's really sad," Mitcham said. "The way they are persecuting people in Russia is quite horrific." Mitcham said Russia's stance would hinder performances and take away the joy of the Games experience. "The Olympics is the best experience you will ever have as an athlete," he said. "Their whole memory and experience is going to be marred by this stuff. They are going to be made to feel unacceptable, inappropriate, and it is a really awful, awful feeling.
"The Olympics are supposed to be somewhere where they can go to be relieved of that feeling.
"A place where you can compete and feel that gender and sexuality is not an issue."
The International Olympic Committee said it had "received assurances from the highest level of government in Russia that the legislation will not affect those attending or taking part in the Games".
However, Russia's Sports Minister Vitaly L. Mutko said Olympic athletes travelling to Russia would be expected to obey the new law.
Conflicting statements don't make anyone feel secure.
